The unemployment rate of the State of Indiana in May was recorded to be 3.7% according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. By comparison, the national unemployment rate reported for May was 4.2%.
Locally, the Marshall County unemployment rate for May was 3.2% ranking the county 50th out of the 92 counties in the state. Last month the rate was 2.8% and in March it was 3.3%.
Looking at the counties surrounding Marshall, we find Starke County again at #3 on the list with an unemployment rate of 4.2% while in April it was 4.0%. LaPorte County dropped to 14th on the list of counties with a rate of 3.7% and in April, they were 9th on the list with a rate of 4.5%. St. Joseph County is 16th on the list in May with an unemployment rate of 3.7%. In April, they were 21st with a rate of 3.2%. Elkhart County is right behind at 17th with a rate of 3.6%. Last month, Elkhart was 25th with a rate of 3.1%.
Looking at the rest of the counties surrounding Marshall, Fulton County is 23rd with an unemployment rate of 3.6%. Last month, their rate was 3.9, and they were ranked 14th.
Kosciusko County is 42nd on the list with a rate of 3.3%. In April, they were 46th with a rate of 2.9%. Pulaski County dropped to 90th on the list with a rate of 2.7%. In April, their rate was 4.3%.
In addition, Indiana’s labor force participation rate is 63.7% compared to the national rate of 62.4%. This rate is the percentage of Hoosiers 16 and older who are either working or actively looking for work. Those not in the labor force include, primarily, students, retirees, and other non-working populations, such as individuals unable to work due to a disability or illness, or adults responsible for their family's childcare needs. Indiana’s total labor force stands at 3,485,635.
May 2025 total private employment is 2,851,400 an increase of 8,400 from the previous month.

- All Other (+1,300)
- Professional & Business Services (+1,200)
- Manufacturing (+700)
- Construction (+700)
As of June 1, 2025, there were 87,114 open job postings throughout the state. As of the week ending on June 7, 2025, Indiana had 21,755 continued unemployment insurance claims filed.
