Illinois DMV text scams continue in Lawrence and surrounding counties

The Illinois Secretary of State has issued another warning to Lawrence County and other motorists about a surge in text-message scams impersonating the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and demanding payment and personal information.

The office emphasized that neither the Secretary of State nor the DMV ever send text messages requesting money or threatening to revoke or suspend citizens driver's licenses. The scams look official and are getting more sophisticated and are designed for one thing--to create panic and cause people to act without thinking. If a person receives these types of messages, do not respond and delete it. Don't click. It's a trick.

The Secretary of State's Office only sends text messages to remind customers about scheduled DMV appointments.
