House Republicans announced intern Sophia Taylor of Shelbyville as the 2026 Verizon Scholarship recipient at the Statehouse.

"Sophia went above and beyond this year, proving herself as a hard worker and someone who is passionate about public service," said State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville), Taylor's state representative. "This scholarship is well-earned and I look forward to seeing her continued impact on our Shelbyville community and state."

Taylor, a junior at Indiana University Indianapolis, spent this spring semester assisting legislators, facilitating meetings and working with constituents. State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon), chair of the House Scholarship Committee, said through her exemplary work and positive attitude, Taylor has shown what it means to be a servant leader.

"Interns like Sophia are a tremendous help to staff and lawmakers during the legislative session," Steuerwald said. "Without their hard work, the General Assembly couldn't get nearly as much done during session. It's great to see Sophia earn this scholarship, and I thank her and our other interns for their efforts."

Steuerwald said each year, one intern from each legislative caucus is awarded a $3,000 Version Scholarship for their work and overall character during their time at the Statehouse. The scholarship will go toward graduate and undergraduate expenses such as tuition or books.

To recognize the hard work and dedication of all Statehouse interns, House Resolution 16 was presented and adopted on the House floor.
