Earthquake recorded in southeastern Illinois

A 3.5 magnitude earthquake was felt early Monday June 29th across the GIANT-FM listening area.

According to information released by the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at around 2:05 a.m.CDT. The epicenter was located southeast of Calhoun Illinois and about 4 miles northeast of West Salem. Illinois at a depth of nearly 12 miles.

Residents in Lawrence County and across the region reported feeling the tremor. It was felt as far away as Evansville, Indiana. There were no reported damages or injuries.

Southern Illinois is affected by both the New Madrid Fault Zone and the Wabash Valley Fault Zone, areas that have periodic earthquake activity. Most are relatively minor
