Sister Connie with the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ in Donaldson has been working with those living in the motels on the northside of Plymouth.
She spoke on WTCA last Friday and told us that many of those living there are the working poor. Part of the issue is that employers are only giving them 6 to 20 hours a week and you can’t rent on with that kind of income. While there are a few individuals living in the motels that are less desirable, there are senior citizens and families with children living in these one-room units.
Twice a week volunteers pack lunches, hygiene packs, and bags of groceries to assist those living in the motels. Their typical rent is $180 a week for one person and $20 weekly for each additional person. The rooms only have a mini-fridge and microwave for meals. While initial sheets are provided, Sister Connie many times goes out and purchases new bedding for someone new moving into the motels. With the weekly rent, there is no laundry service for the bedding, and toilet paper is $1 a roll.
GIANT fm WTCA has opened our doors to be a drop-off location for items that are used weekly, plastic grocery bags, and zip-lock baggies for sandwiches, chips, and a sweet treat. There is also a need for brown paper, lunch sacks, and napkins.
If you are interested in helping Sister Connie and the many volunteers who make sandwiches and pack groceries for those most in need in our community, please drop off your donations at WTCA, 112 West Washington Street in Plymouth from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
