The Amos Road Improvement Project is designed to eliminate one of the most dangerous stretches of road in Shelbyville.
Pulling information from 2016 through 2021, there were 54 automobile incidents (rear-end, right-angle and left-turn collisions most commonly) on Amos Road near the State Road 44 intersection, according to a City of Shelbyville media release.
With the entrance to the Shelbyville Golden Bear Preschool there and the soon to be built WAWA convenience store bringing more traffic to the area, the city is getting assistance with state and federal dollars to improve traffic flow in the area.
The city will pay 20% of the total cost for the project.
On Tuesday at the Shelbyville Central Schools Administrative Offices, city officials held an open house as a first look to the improvements planned for the area.

Amos Road will see a significant safety upgrade in 2029 with turn lanes being added from State Road 44 to the CSX Railroad bridge.
The approximately $3.41 million project will cover the half-mile section of Amos Road from the CSX Railroad Bridge near Eberhart Drive north to State Road 44.
The improvements include:
- Widening portions of Amos Road to add a center left-turn lane
- Constructing new sidewalks on the west side and a multi-use path on the east side of Amos Road
- Adding a dedicated eastbound right-turn lane at the intersection of State Road 44 and Amos Road
- Improving storm water drainage, curbs, pavement and driveway connections
The project will require the acquisition of portions of residential and commercial properties along the corridor. No residential or business relocations are anticipated.
Comstock explained Tuesday that the right-of-way acquisitions along the west side of the corridor are to redesign the utilities in the area.
All widening of Amos Road will be on the east side.
Construction is expected to begin in 2029.
