The Bourbon Police Department is warning local businesses and residents to be vigilant after counterfeit $100 bills were discovered in circulation.

A local Bourbon business recently accepted counterfeit $100 bills that appeared authentic enough to pass standard marker tests used to detect fake currency.

According to Bourbon Police, the counterfeit bills are "really good fakes" featuring older-style currency with a 1990 date. The quality of the counterfeits is particularly concerning, as they were able to pass the counterfeit detection marker test commonly used by businesses.

Police are alerting local and surrounding businesses to be extra cautious when accepting $100 bills, particularly those with older designs. The department recommends businesses use multiple verification methods beyond marker tests to authenticate large bills.

Anyone who has questions, concerns, or believes they have received questionable $100 bills should immediately contact the Bourbon Police Department at 574-342-3105.

Businesses are encouraged to examine all large bills carefully and report any suspected counterfeits to law enforcement rather than attempting to return them to customers.

Possessing or passing counterfeit currency is a federal crime. Anyone who unknowingly receives counterfeit bills should not attempt to spend them and should contact local law enforcement immediately.
