Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the death of an Indianapolis man after recovering his body from the Wabash River in Fountain County Saturrday.
Just after 1 p.m., the Fountain Warren Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call about a possible drowning in the 2200 block of North Portland Arch Road near the town of Covington.
First responders were notified that a 21-year-old male entered the water in attempts to cross the river when he disappeared beneath the surface and did not resurface.
Indiana Conservation Officers, Lafayette Fire Department, and the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office water rescue team responded and deployed boats and used sonar equipment to search the area. Conservation officer divers recovered the man’s body just after 5 p.m.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the exact cause of death is pending an autopsy. The identity of the male is being withheld pending notification of family.
Other assisting agencies include Fountain County Emergency Medical Services, Warren County Emergency Medical Services, Covington Fire Department, Williamsport Fire Department, Pine Village Fire Department, Perrysville Fire Department, West Lebanon Fire Department, Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Covington Police Department, Warren County Coroner’s Office, and Indiana State Police.
