The Johnson County Sheriff's Office says a tip helped lead to arrests in cases of baseballs, softballs and rocks being thrown from interstate overpasses.
Major Damian Katt and Sergeant Ryan Bartlett with the assistance of Criminal Analyst Emily Watson of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office acted on a crime tip received regarding the recent series of dangerous incidents. The investigation centered on reports of items being thrown off two separate overpasses in Johnson County. The first incident occurred on Nov. 9 about 9:15 p.m. Deputy Napier responded to a report of individuals throwing items off an overpass, discovering a large quantity of baseballs on the roadway that were removed to ensure driver safety.
The second incident occurred about 6:45 p.m. on Nov. 25. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of individuals throwing rocks from the overpass at County Roads 250 S and 600 E onto Interstate 65. Multiple 911 calls were received, including one from a tractor-trailer driver who reported vehicle damage and was awaiting assistance from the Indiana State Police.
Major Katt and Sergeant Bartlett uncovered that the items being thrown — baseballs and softballs — had been stolen from a local little league organization in Franklin. Their investigation led to the identification and interviews of three juveniles connected to the incidents.
The case is now being referred to the Johnson County Prosecutor's Office for review and consideration of potential charges.
Sheriff Duane E. Burgess commended the exceptional work of all law enforcement officers involved in the investigation, saying,
"This was a troubling incident that caused property damage and could have led to serious injuries. We were very fortunate that no one was hurt. The swift and thorough work of our team demonstrates the dedication of our officers to ensuring public safety and holding those responsible accountable."
