Ten local wrestlers advance to IHSAA girls wrestling regional competitions

Six Triton Central wrestlers advanced out of Friday's Perry Meridian Sectional including sectional champion Zoie Gray (third from right).

A total of 10 Shelby County wrestlers advanced to IHSAA Girls Wrestling Regional competitions.

Six Triton Central wrestlers secured regional berths at the Perry Meridian Sectional Friday while four Shelbyville wrestlers kept their seasons alive at the Indian Creek Sectional.

Triton Central junior Zoie Gray was the only sectional champion of the 10 wrestlers that advanced. Gray, ranked No. 3 in the 190-pound weight class, won two matches by pinfall in less than one minute and then dominated the championship match to capture the sectional title.

Gray defeated Franklin Central’s Sophia Jones, 11-1 in the championship. It was Gray’s third win this season over Jones, who is ranked No. 4 in the weight class.

At 110 pounds, Triton Central’s Harper Young lost in the sectional championship match to North Central’s Victoria Duenas Zelaya, who is ranked No. 5 in the state.

Young won her first two matches by pinfall then outlasted Beech Grove’s Danica Ray, 13-12, in the semifinal round to reach the championship.

At 145 pounds, Farah Coen lost her opening match in the quarterfinal round then won three consecutive matches to place third overall. Coen won the third-place match by pinfall over Decatur Central’s Jayla Bruce.

Also advancing from Triton Central with fourth-place finishes were Aubrie Propp (115), Lillian Siegel (170) and Kahli Burmeister (235).

Triton Central finished sixth in the team standings, just two points behind Greenwood for fifth place.

Indian Creek Sectional

Shelbyville moved four on to the regional round including 2025 state qualifier Joan Price.

Price, ranked No. 12 at 110 pounds, finished fourth at the sectional. She lost to No. 4 ranked Elizabeth Dowty (Indian Creek) in the semifinal round and No. 2 ranked Khloe Nedelsky (Whiteland) in the third-place match.

The field also included Seymour’s AnnMarie Shuler, ranked No. 6 in the weight class. Shuler defeated Dowty in the sectional championship match.

Shelbyville’s best finish came from Karyme Astudillo (photo, far right) at 145 pounds. The freshman won her opening match before falling to eventual sectional champion Aubrey Belser of Franklin (ranked No. 7) in the semifinals.

Astudillo then defeated Bloomington South’s Leyda Valazquez and Bedford North Lawrence’s Abby Tipton to secure third place.

Also advancing for Shelbyville were Cora Flynn (4th place at 120) and Leia Conner (4th place at 130).

The Golden Bears placed seventh in the team standings.

Muncie Central Regional

The top four finishers in each weight class at the regional qualify for the IHSAA State Finals on Jan. 16 at Corteva Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Gray will need to defeat Connersville’s Cora Francis in her opening match Saturday then best either Elwood’s Mariska Henderson or New Palestine’s Miranda LaRoche in the quarterfinals to earn a second consecutive appearance in the state championship meet.

That would set up a potential semifinal showdown with No. 8 ranked Shelby Life of Centerville.

There are three state-ranked wrestlers in the bottom half of the bracket at 190 pounds – No. 4 Sophia Jones of Franklin Central, No. 11 Aneesa Thompson of Perry Meridian and No. 16 Amara Crawford of Jay County.

Young will face Frankton’s Jaden Hughes in the opening round at 110 pounds. The winner will likely face top-ranked Hailey Korporal of Eastbrook in the quarterfinal round.

Propp opens against No. 2 ranked Kynlie Keffer of Daleville at 115 pounds.

At 145, Coen will battle Greensburg’s Anastasia Ridzon with the winner likely meeting No. 13 ranked Daniela Ramirez-Zarate of Carmel.

Siegel will meet the only state-ranked wrestler in the 170-pound bracket – Wes-Del’s Paislee Chambers (No. 14) – for her opening match.

Burmeister must defeat No. 4 Keely Allen of Greenfield-Central to keep her season at 235 pounds alive.

Bloomington South Regional

Price is one of seven state-ranked wrestlers in the regional field at 110 pounds. She will face No. 7 Kenna Kleinschmidt of North Posey in the opening round.

The winner will face either Borden’s Ashton Conley or Mooresville’s Bridget Martin.

Seymour’s AnnMarie Shuler (No. 6) also is in the bottom half of the bracket.

The top half of the bracket features No. 2 Khloe Nedelsky (Whiteland), No. 4 Elizabeth Dowty (Indian Creek), No. 11 Lila Epstein (Brebeuf) and No. 13 Scarlett Rudnick (Floyd Central).

At 120, Flynn will open against No. 4 Khloe Weber of Mooresville.

Conner is paired up with Speedway’s Janyla Dale in the opening match at 130. The winner will meet either Justice Stillwagoner of Mt. Vernon or Leah Luke of South Dearborn.

Astudillo avoided a state-ranked competitor at 145 pounds for her first match. She will face Speedway’s Mia Custer-Smith. However, the winner will likely square off with top-ranked Ava Allen of Silver Creek in the quarterfinals.
