Prep Report: Southwestern secures first win of season over Mooresville Christian

Southwestern needed 11 made three-pointers to secure its first win of the season.

Landon Drake and Jay Utley each hit three 3s to lead the Spartans to a 59-53 overtime win Saturday over visiting Mooresville Christian.

Drake’s final long-range bomb came in overtime where Southwestern outscored the Eagles, 10-4. Drake finished with a team-high 18 points.

Utley and Dusty Stevens each scored 11 in the win. Mitchell Clements ended with 10.

The Spartans (1-6) led 14-4 after one quarter but the Eagles trimmed the deficit to 25-22 by halftime. Southwestern still led after three quarters, 38-36.

Easton Craney led Mooresville Christian (3-4) with 20 points. Harrison Craney finished with 15.

Southwestern won the junior varsity game, 37-34.

Brady Mitchell led the Spartans with 11 points. Jackson Guy had 10.

The Spartans begin chase for a Shelby County Tournament title Friday with a semifinal contest against Morristown (6-3) at Waldron High School.

Boys basketball

Triton Central 52, Indianapolis Roncalli 43

At Roncalli Friday, Class 2A, No. 11 Triton Central played the entire fourth quarter without leading scorer Eli Sego and still outscored the unbeaten Royals 15-7 to secure the win.

Sego (20.2 ppg), the third-leading scorer in Triton Central history, received a technical foul midway through the third quarter and did not return to the game. He finished with 11 points.

The Tigers led 37-36 after three quarters. Brody Hartman and Brayden Hoover each hit 3s in the fourth quarter and Grant Long added a pair of field goals to keep the Class 3A, No. 3 Royals at bay.

Jackson Faust led Triton Central (7-2) with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. Hartman also finished with 11 points. Long added eight points and five rebounds.

Will Hegwood topped the Royals (7-1) with 10 points. Luke Feldman and Conner Kesler each scored nine.

Triton Central travels to Waldron Friday for a 6 p.m. semifinal game against the Mohawks (6-3) in the Shelby County Tournament.

Waldron 65, Brown County 51

At Waldron Friday, the visiting Eagles led 26-25 at halftime then got outscored 22-10 in the third quarter and never recovered.

Eli Stewart and Ethan Moody combined to score 18 points in the third quarter to spark the Mohawks (6-3) to the win.

Moody finished with a game-high 22 points. Stewart had 12 points and Luke Myers ended with nine. Ten different Mohawks scored in the win.

Aiden Lee led Brown County (3-7) with 15 points. Cash Harden finished with 13.

Waldron is hosting the 100th Shelby County Boys Basketball Tournament, which begins Friday. The Mohawks open the tournament at 6 p.m. against Class 2A, No. 11 Triton Central (7-2).

Morristown 57, Cowan 40

At Cowan Saturday, a strong third quarter push propelled the Yellow Jackets to their third road win of the season.

Morristown outscored the Blackhawks 17-2 in the third quarter to take a 44-27 lead, then hit 9 of 10 free throws in the final quarter to improve to 6-3 this season.

Four different Yellow Jackets scored in double digits led by Kellen Crim’s 15. Brayden Anderson finished with 13 while Owen Rinzel and Dalton McMichael each scored 10.

Brody Clifford and Jake Self each scored 12 points to lead Cowan (2-6). Luke Garrett finished with 11.

Morristown faces Southwestern (1-6) Friday in the second semifinal game of the Shelby County Tournament at Waldron High School.

Girls basketball

Shelbyville 55, Columbus East 43

At Columbus East Saturday, a strong first half helped the visiting Golden Bears get their record back to .500 for the season.

Shelbyville (7-7) built a 34-23 lead at halftime and never trailed again.

Jayla Ash led the Golden Bears with 20 points (14 in the first half). Hannah Baker finished with 16.

Ella Anthis and Brelyn Pool each scored 11 points to lead the Olympians (5-11).

Shelbyville will host Southport (3-11) Wednesday at Garrett Gymnasium.

Triton Central 59, Franklin County 53

At Franklin County Saturday, the visiting Tigers trailed 18-11 after one quarter then started the comeback climb. A 20-point third quarter sparked by a trio of three-pointers by Layla Compton put Triton Central in the lead 44-42.

The Class 2A, No. 12 Tigers hit 7 of 12 free throws in the final quarter and Maryrose Felling and Kate Collier each hit a 3 to secure the win.

Felling finished with a game-high 27 points. Quinn King and Collier each scored 11.

Kodie Cox led Franklin County (7-8) with 20 points. Audrey Mears sank four 3s and finished with 13 points.

Triton Central won the junior varsity game, 39-23. Maddie Burnett led the Tigers with 15 points.

Triton Central (10-3) takes on Southwestern (2-13) Thursday in the second semifinal game of the 50th Shelby County Girls Basketball Tournament at Waldron High School.

Girls swimming

Hoosier Heritage Conference Championships

Shelbyville senior Riley Everette scored a pair of top five finishes in the Golden Bears’ final appearance in a HHC swimming event.

At New Palestine Saturday, Everette finished runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.62 seconds. Delta’s Alivia Jackson won the race in 57.74.

Everette also finished fourth in the 50 freestyle in 25.08. She finished .65 seconds behind race winner Eleanor Groves of Delta.

Chloe Claxton placed fifth in the diving competition for Shelbyville. She totaled 266.70 points.

Also securing top 10 finishes for the Golden Bears were Naomi Garringer in the 100 backstroke (10th in 1:10.02) and Anne Marie Fansler in the 100 breaststroke (10th in 1:18.39).

Shelbyville finished sixth in all three relay races and placed sixth overall in the team standings.

Greenfield-Central captured the HHC title with 515 points. Delta was runner-up at 364, finishing ahead of Yorktown (308), Mt. Vernon (299), New Palestine (240), Shelbyville (167), Pendleton Heights (122) and New Castle (87).

Shelbyville is joining the Hoosier Legends Conference next season.
