Prep Report: Shelbyville volleyball wins first match

Shelbyville boys volleyball won its first match of the season Monday at Indianapolis Washington, 25-18, 25-16, 25-22.

Jay Kawakami led the Golden Bears (1-14) with eight kills and nine service aces. Jack Bassett finished with four kills and six aces.

Hunter Richard had a team-high nine digs and Harlyn Feathers had nine assists.

The Continentals dropped to 0-3.

Shelbyville is at Greenwood (6-2) Thursday.

Softball

Pendleton Heights 6, Shelbyville 5, 9 innings

At Shelbyville, a ninth-inning single by Macy Hufford scored Grace Fisher to give the visiting Arabians the lead once again and Brynlie Holden shut down the Golden Bears for a fourth-straight inning to secure the Hoosier Heritage Conference victory.

Pendleton Heights (4-4, 1-0 HHC) scored single runs in each of the first four innings off Shelbyville starting pitcher Gracie Crafton (2-4), who threw all nine innings.

The Golden Bears (4-5, 0-1 HHC) took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning off a Pendleton Heights error that scored June Murdick and Addie Herald.

A run-scoring double by Hufford tied the game in the seventh.

Shelbyville is at New Castle (2-4, 0-1 HHC) tonight.

Girls tennis

Triton Central 5, Shelbyville 0

At Shelbyville, the visiting Tigers swept all five matches in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Maryrose Felling defeated Ava Muckerheide, 7-5, 6-4.

Anniston Evans bested Sophia Asher at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

Zhibek Zhumaly topped Corinne Aldridge at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-4.

At No. 1 doubles, Kate Collier and Neve Kahler defeated Megan Childres and Reese Fortune, 6-2, 6-1.

Estelle Gearlds and Cadence Roberts won at No. 2 doubles over Ava Fralich and Abby Huntsman, 6-0, 6-1.

Waldron 5, Rushville 0

At Rushville, the Mohawks won all five matches in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Riley Thurston defeated Izzy Simmerman, 6-2, 6-2.

Ava Leising produced a No. 2 singles win over Annie Buzzard, 6-4, 6-3.

Malia Murphy completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Grace Doll.

At No. 1 doubles, Jackie Corlett and Emerson Lindsey cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Cora Morgan and Kelsey Morgan.

Hanna Rouse and Madeline Walker defeated Elise Cain and Brylee Shaver, 6-3, 7-5.

Brown County 3, Southwestern 2

At Brown County, Saoia Villanueva secured the Spartans’ lone singles win.

Southwestern’s No. 1 doubles team of Callie Beck and Hayden Ramey improved to 4-0 this season.
