Prep Report: Ash leads Shelbyville to third-straight win

Shelbyville climbed back above .500 this season with a 61-26 win Wednesday over Southport.

At Garrett Gymnasium, sophomore Jayla Ash scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Golden Bears (8-7). She is averaging 19.6 ppg over the 3-game win streak.

Maddy Jones hit three three-pointers and finished with nine points. Hannah Baker and Melia Cartwright each scored eight. Ten different Golden Bears scored in the win.

Lorelei Bennett led Southport (3-12) with 12 points.

Shelbyville won the junior varsity game, 34-19.

The Golden Bears host Yorktown (9-6) Saturday afternoon.

Greenwood Christian 59, Southwestern 19

At Greenwood Christian Tuesday, a balanced scoring effort by the Cougars helped them improve to 8-8 this season.

Greenwood Christian led 13-6 after one quarter then outscored the Spartans 21-3 in the second quarter to create a 34-9 lead at halftime.

Myra Finnity led the Cougars with 13 points. Kate Reed finished with 10.

Bryla Dunbar topped the Spartans (2-14) with six points.

Maci Murray and Maddie Barlow each scored four.

Shelbyville 95, Batesville 81

At Shelbyville, the Golden Bears did not need a win in the final event to secure the win but added the first-place points anyway.

Luca Kinker, Everett Stegemiller, Brody Jeanette and Shia Veach combined to win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:02.1.

Winning individual events for Shelbyville were Kinker (1:06.33 in 100 butterfly), Jeanette (2:21.94 in 200 individual medley; 1:13.32 in 100 breaststroke), John Turner (152.8 points diving), Anderson Mollenkopf (57.15 in 100 freestyle) and Stegemiller (6:09.63 in 500 freestyle).

The Golden Bears scored top three finishers in two events.

Following Jeanette in the 200 individual medley were Mollenkopf (2:35.31) and Kendryk Pike (2:51.2).

Mollenkopf was followed to the finish line in the 100 freestyle by Veach (1:06.69) and Colton Maloney (1:15.65).

Shelbyville 84, Batesville 84

At Shelbyville, the Golden Bears won 11 of the 12 races contested but did not have enough depth to secure the outright win.

Shelbyville opened the event with a solid performance from Riley Everette, Meeghen Bushfield, Paige Bohman and Anne Marie Fansler to win the 200 medley relay in 2:10.69.

  • Fansler won the 200 freestyle in 2:21.84
  • Bohman was the fastest in the 200 individual medley (2:42.15)
  • Naomi Garringer collected first-place points in the 50 freestyle (27.8).
  • Chloe Claxton totaled 159.2 points to win the diving competition
  • Bushfield won the 100 butterfly in 1:12.03
  • Everette won the 100 freestyle in 58.38
  • Garringer earned her second individual win in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.37).
  • Fansler also got a second individual win in the 100 backstroke (1:12.75)
  • Everette dominated in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.37)

Garringer, Everette and Bushfield teamed with Ana Felipe to win the 200 freestyle relay.

Batesville’s lone win came in the 400 freestyle relay (4:31.28).
