The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced the enrollment totals and classifications that will be used for state tournaments in 2026-27 and 2027-28.
The enrollment figures, the total number of boys and girls in grades 9-12, were submitted by the schools to the Indiana Department of Education. Those numbers are used to determine the classifications in the team sports of baseball, boys and girls basketball, football, boys and girls soccer, softball and girls volleyball the next two years.
Sectional assignments will be approved by the IHSAA Executive Committee on May 5.
Four-class sports (baseball, basketball, softball and girls volleyball) will continue to use the 20-25-25-30 format — the largest 20% of schools in Class 4A, the next 25% in 3A, the next 25% in 2A and the smallest 30% in Class A.
Football (six classes) and soccer (three classes) are not affected and will continue as in recent years.

Shelbyville’s two-year run in a Class 3A sectional with New Palestine and Greenwood will end. The Dragons and Woodmen will return to 4A status based on enrollment.
Shelbyville is the 10th largest school in 3A with 1,078 students.
