UPS facility in Bourbon closed Tuesday, workers moved to other terminals

UPS announced earlier this year that it would be closing several of its Indiana locations in 2025. Among those expected to close, the UPS terminal in Bourbon, and those in Crawfordsville and Washington.

Teamsters Local Union 710 announced on Feb. 28 that UPS Labor confirmed three buildings in their union's jurisdiction would be eventually closing in 2025. 

Local 710 officials said they will be working out all of the details about what that means for local UPS employees to ensure their members continue working and stated they plan to fight for every member’s job. 

After an announced target date of June 30, the Bourbon facility was closed on Tuesday. Workers were being moved to jobs at other facilities as much as was possible.

The company's statement on the closings:

"As announced on our Q1 earnings call, we are executing the largest network reconfiguration in UPS history. This strategic initiative will optimize the capacity of our network to align with expected volume levels and enhance productivity through additional automation. The reconfiguration will impact positions, and we are committed to supporting our employees throughout this process. While our building footprint is changing, our record of reliable pickup and delivery is not. We remain committed to providing industry-leading service to customers in more than 200 countries and territories around the world."

The goal is to align capacity with volume being moved. It would expand some buildings and close others.

Employees are being moved to other facilities as much as possible.

Bourbon is a town of about 1,600 residents. Its UPS terminal has been one of the largest employers and is the largest corporate entity in the community.
