Wednesday, Congressman Rudy Yakym (IN-02) joined United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer for a Ways and Means roundtable to discuss the United States’ recent trade deals and continue discussing future deals, emphasizing the importance of Indiana’s manufacturing and small business communities.
“We had a productive conversation with Ambassador Greer,” Rep. Yakym said. “I’m encouraged by this week’s trade deal announcements with Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines. These agreements will reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers for farmers, medical device makers, and manufacturers across Indiana’s Second District. I’m also hopeful for progress in talks with Indonesia on critical imports not found in the U.S., especially lauan wood, which is vital to the RV industry. I look forward to working with this administration to keep delivering real results, by standing up to global competitors and protecting American workers.”
Background:
On Tuesday, President Trump announced deals with Japan and the Philippines and released additional details about the deal with Indonesia. These deals promise to break down long-standing barriers to U.S. goods and services exports.
The joint statement released regarding Indonesia noted additional discussions on reduced tariffs for commodities “not naturally available or domestically produced” in the U.S. Lauan wood is a key input for the RV industry, which has a heavy footprint as Indiana’s Second District is the “RV Capital of the World.”
