State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle) is urging state and federal leaders to explore options to help Indiana farmers facing high diesel fuel costs during harvest season.
Baird recently sent letters to Gov. Mike Braun and President Donald Trump requesting that the administrations review available options to temporarily reduce fuel costs for farmers and agricultural operators hauling and harvesting crops.
"Fuel is one of the unavoidable costs that Hoosier farmers face when they're working to get crops out of the field," Baird said. "After hearing directly from local farmers about what diesel prices are costing them, I wanted to find out what options may be available to provide some temporary relief."
Baird said any relief should be focused on agricultural operations directly related to harvesting and transporting crops during the harvest season. He also asked officials to examine whether relief could be provided through existing state or federal authority.
"Indiana farmers help feed our state and our country, and they can't wait to harvest until fuel prices go down," Baird said. "If there are responsible steps that can be taken to lower their costs during this critical period, those options are worth examining."
