Driver airlifted to hospital following severe collision with semi on U.S. 30

A serious collision between a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck at a construction zone intersection on Friday evening left one driver entrapped and requiring an emergency airlift to a regional hospital.

According to a news release from Deputy Anthony Bragg of the Marshall County Sheriff's Department, the crash occurred at approximately 6:54 p.m. on Friday, May 1, at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Union Road.

Authorities report that James L. Wilson was driving a 2024 Freightliner semi with a trailer eastbound on U.S. 30, traveling through an active construction zone. As the semi approached the Union Road intersection, a 2010 Toyota Corolla driven by Brian A. Foster, traveling northbound on Union Road, entered the intersection and crossed directly into the semi's lane of travel.

Wilson was unable to avoid the collision, resulting in the front of the Freightliner striking the driver's side of the Corolla.

First responders arrived to find Foster unresponsive and trapped inside his vehicle. Plymouth EMS personnel successfully extricated Foster from the wreckage. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was flown by helicopter to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for emergency medical treatment. His current condition has not been released.

The Marshall County Sheriff's Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. They were assisted at the scene by the Plymouth Police Department and the Plymouth Fire Department.
