Congressman Rudy Yakym (IN-02) applauded the U.S. Department of Transportation’s selection of the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad for up to $2.88 million in federal funding.
Rep. Yakym sent a letter of support to DOT urging the Department to fund the project, backing the railroad’s successful application.
"Freight rail keeps northern Indiana's economy moving," said Rep. Yakym. "That's why I fought for this funding - to make our rail infrastructure stronger and more reliable. This investment means safer crossings, fewer breakdowns, and a stronger supply chain for Hoosier manufacturers and farmers."
“When it comes to a highly competitive federal grant process, we cannot be more thankful to have Congressman Yakym in our corner. He understood from the beginning that the infrastructure improvements made possible by this funding will make our railroad safer for our employees, more reliable for our shippers and will keep Indiana economically competitive,” said Todd Bjornstad, President, Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad.
BACKGROUND:
The funding comes through the Federal Railroad Administration's Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program.
The project will:
- Rehabilitate tracks in northern Indiana.
- Replace cross ties and switch ties.
- Improve switches.
- Upgrade four railroad crossings to enhance safety and reliability.
The railroad will contribute a 40 percent non-federal cost share. Read more about the project here.
