Seventy-five cents goes a long way Friday afternoon at Webster Elementary, as second graders will be putting newly learned skills to use in running lemonade stands.
Anyone who stops by to purchase lemonade will not only be helping students put basic financial concepts into practice, such as identifying different types of money and making change, but also will support a cause voted on by the students.
"We thought this is too awesome to not do annually," said Miranda Vinson, a second grade teacher at Webster. "The kids are really excited to put their skills to use."
She added that the project is a perfect culmination to second graders' money math unit, as it also coincides with their goods and services reading unit.
Despite the idea taking shape for the first time last year and last minute, Vinson noted turnout was huge.
"The kids loved it, and the community really showed up to support them," she said, hoping for the same response this year.
There will be three lemonade stands, one for each classroom, set up in front of the school from 12:30-1:30 p.m. From counting money, making lemonade, holding signs and manning a new table of preorders this year, there is a job for every second grader.
Gallons of lemonade, $8 each, can still be preordered through 6 p.m. today by emailing Vinson at mvinson@plymouth.k12.in.us.
"We set the price of a cup to 75 cents, so the kids more than likely have to make change," Vinson noted.
She encourages everyone to come out and bring friends and family.
Through the project, students also learn about needs within the community and vote on a cause to donate their proceeds. This year, they voted to donate proceeds to Plymouth Police Department's K-9 Fund.
Second graders also made commercials for the lemonade stands that can be viewed on Webster Elementary's Facebook page.
