A Walkerton man was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning after a Marshall County deputy clocked him driving 30 miles per hour over the speed limit — and discovered his license had previously been suspended for the same offense.
At approximately 4:08 a.m. on May 29, Deputy Prater with the Marshall County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop in the area of U.S. 30 and Elm Road after observing a vehicle traveling 90 mph in a posted 60 mph zone.
The driver was identified as Brandon Thomas Wigent, 23, of Walkerton. A check of his driving record revealed that his license was suspended — and that the suspension stemmed from a prior driving while suspended offense, elevating the charge to a Class A Misdemeanor.
Wigent was arrested at the scene and held on a $500 cash bond.
Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
