The last time South Vermillion took on Southmont, the Mounties ran away from the Wildcats to the tune of a 73-60 victory on Feb. 11.
On Friday night, the two teams met again, this time in the semi-finals of the Class 2A Sectional 41 Tournament and this time it was the Wildcats that got the last laugh, blasting Southmont, 75-64. The win not only avenged the lone loss down the stretch, it moved the Wildcats (14-10) into the final of the sectional tournament against Parke Heritage on Saturday night.
Early on, the Mounties had all the control, racing out to a 7-0 lead before South Vermillion woke up and stormed back with a 14-10 lead after the first quarter. The lead would swell to 35-23 at the half, thanks, in part to the play of Dallas Coleman, who scored 14 points in the first half, and Aden Wallace, who scored nine for South Vermillion.
Southmont came racing back in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to five midway through the third quarter, but it was as close as the Mounties would get in the second half.
Each time Southmont put together a run, South Vermillion's Dominic Garzolini responded with a three pointer, as the senior drilled seven in his second consecutive outing.
Garzolini led the way for the Wildcats, scoring 23 points, while both Coleman and Wallace added 16 in the victory.
Southmont was led by Aaron McMasters, who scored 22 points, while Austin Foley chipped in with 10.
