Construction to begin next week at U.S. 31 and State Road 10 in Marshall County

Drivers traveling through the intersection of U.S. 31 and State Road 10 should prepare for significant traffic changes as the Indiana Department of Transportation launches construction on a new Reduced Conflict Intersection (RCI) at the location starting June 9th.

INDOT contractor E & B Paving LLC will handle the project, which is expected to run through July. During construction, the left lane and shoulder of both northbound and southbound U.S. 31 will be closed. The median at the intersection will also be closed, meaning drivers will no longer be able to turn left from U.S. 31 onto State Road 10 in either direction. Access to State Road 10 from U.S. 31 will be limited to right-in, right-out only.

Detour routes will be in place for affected drivers. Motorists traveling westbound on State Road 10 should head north on U.S. 31 and use the U.S. 30 interchange ramps to turn around to southbound U.S. 31, then return to westbound State Road 10. Those traveling eastbound on State Road 10 should follow southbound U.S. 31, then State Road 110, and then State Road 331.

An RCI is an alternative to traditional four-lane highway intersections. Rather than crossing oncoming lanes of fast-moving traffic, drivers turn right in the direction of traffic flow, merge into the left lane, and make a U-turn to travel in their intended direction — reducing the risk of high-speed, head-on collisions.

INDOT noted that the RCI is an interim safety measure. A full interchange at the U.S. 31 and State Road 10 location is still in the planning stages, with construction currently scheduled to begin in 2028.

INDOT is urging motorists to allow extra travel time through the area, follow all posted signage and traffic directions, slow down in the work zone, and drive distraction-free. More information about RCIs and the broader U.S. 31 corridor projects is available on the INDOT website.
