An interruption in some NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) services is expected next week.
A large internal computer system upgrade to the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) starts on Monday and lasts through at least Wednesday. The upgrade could also extend into Thursday or even Friday if problems are encountered.
All of the NOAA weather radios (NWR) that cover central Indiana will be off the air for the entire time that the system is down.
The upgrade is part of a national rotation schedule for all NWS offices. Even if severe weather looks likely next week they will still proceed with the upgrade. Service backup by the neighboring offices will occur for central Indiana during this period, and the NWS will maintain operational meteorologists on shift 24 / 7 to use PC based applications and aid backup offices with local expertise on forecasts and warnings, if necessary.
However, there is no way to backup the NWR system unfortunately since that is run solely on the local AWIPS.
Below is a list of transmitters and frequencies that will be impacted.
