The Hamilton Center presented its annual Hamilton Awards, honoring individuals and organizations for their dedication to mental health advocacy, addiction recovery, and community well-being. Named after Katherine Hamilton, a pioneer in mental health advocacy in the 1960s, the awards embody her vision of inclusion and support for those struggling with mental illness. This year’s honorees exemplify the mission of the Hamilton Center:
Staff Award: William Kennedy, Peer Recovery Specialist
- Joining the Hamilton Center in June, Kennedy has already made an extraordinary impact. Known for his unwavering dedication, Kennedy approaches his work with compassion, helping clients struggling with addiction find resources and placements. His ability to connect through his own lived experiences inspires hope and dignity in those he serves.
Volunteer Award: Rebecca Johnson
- A former participant in the Parke County Drug Court, Johnson has turned her recovery journey into a mission to help others. She leads Celebrate Recovery meetings twice weekly, mentors individuals on the path to recovery, and offers enthusiastic support in court. Her efforts reflect her commitment to “paying it forward” and fostering resilience in others.
Community Award: John Plasse (posthumously)
- A dedicated public servant, former Vigo County Sheriff and Army National Guard Sergeant Major John Plasse devoted his life to protecting the public and improving his community. His legacy includes serving on the Hamilton Center Board of Directors and numerous local initiatives. Plasse was remembered as a leader of integrity, driven by a mission to uplift others.
Youth Award: Bring Change to Mind, North Vigo High School
- This student-led organization is breaking the stigma around mental health through advocacy and education. By equipping students with the tools to promote self-care and support, Bring Change to Mind creates a compassionate and stigma-free environment at North Vigo High School, fostering empathy and real change in the community.
The Hamilton Center continues to uphold Katherine Hamilton’s vision by celebrating these inspiring leaders and their contributions to mental health awareness and recovery.
