Prep Report: Waldron tennis places third at competitive Silver Creek Invitational

Waldron tennis secured a third-place finish Saturday in the two-day Silver Creek Invitational.

Seymour captured the team title with Evansville Memorial earning runner-up just ahead of the Mohawks in the eight-team field.

Waldron won two of the five divisions.

Charlie Fischer was the champion at No. 1 singles. He won his first two matches in straight sets to reach the championship against Silver Creek’s Ledger Cissell.

Cissell raced out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set before Fischer adjusted and won the next five games. The first set eventually went to a tiebreaker where Fischer prevailed 7-5.

That momentum carried into the second set where Fischer secured the 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory.

At No. 1 doubles, Jackson Kuhn and Caige Sheaffer defeated opponents from Loogootee and Evansville Memorial to set up a rematch against Seymour’s David Lemming and Braylon Busby, the only team to defeat the Mohawks this season.

The Owls won the first set 6-2 but the Mohawks recovered to win the second set and raced out to a 9-0 lead in the third set tiebreaker.

Kuhn and Sheaffer prevailed 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.

Noah Leap (No. 3 singles) and Owen Hartman and Kevin Crouch (No. 2 doubles) each won their quarterfinal round match before being defeated in the semifinal round.

At No. 2 singles, Lincoln Fischer lost to Seymour’s Dane Thompson, 6-3, 6-2 in his opening round match. Fischer went 1-1 in playback matches.

Cross country

Rick Weinheimer Invitational

At Ceraland Park Saturday in Columbus, Shelbyville’s America Leon finished 46^th overall out of 181 varsity runners. She crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 24 seconds.

Also competing for the Golden Bears were Macey Robbins (21:33), Kat Seal (25:39), Anne Marie Fansler (26:17) and Belle Orem (26:44).

Shia Veach led Shelbyville in the boys race. He placed 51^st in 16:51. Also competing were Eden Ortega (18:23), Kendryk Pike (19:33), Anderson Mollenkopf (19:59) and Tanner Jones (20:59).

Ryan Crisman (18:44), Jasen Tweedy (23:19) and Donald Kuhn (23:20) represented Morristown in the boys race.

Audrey Van Dyke led the Morristown girls team with a finishing time of 22:16. Also running were Jo Kuhn (23:27), Brooke Kuhn (26:06), Emma Oster (28:45) and Madison Richardson (29:12).

Competing for Southwestern were Landon Drake (21:21), Ethan Sipes (23:26) and Jayden Thurston (25:45).

Waldron was represented by Jacob Kuhn (18:12), Spencer Armstrong (20:59) and Wyatt Armstrong (25:29) in the boys race and Sophia Meriwether (27:26) and Kassidy Meulen (30:48) in the girls race.

Boys soccer

Southwestern 3, Hauser 2

At Southwestern Friday, Ethan Sipes scored the game’s first and final goal to lead the Spartans past the Jets.

Sipes had the game’s only goal in the first half to stake Southwestern (3-2-2) to a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Kolton Grimes tied the Mid-Hoosier Conference match early in the second half. Less than five minutes later, Dusty Stevens put the Spartans back in the lead, 2-1.

Landon Pendleton got the Jets (6-2, 2-1 MHC) back even midway through the second half.

Sipes delivered the game winner with 12:19 to go. The goal was his sixth this season.

Franklin Central 5, Shelbyville 0

At Shelbyville, five different Flashes recorded a goal in the shutout victory over the Golden Bears (2-6).

Emmanuel Kuhn, Jaxon Lucero, G.G. Ximello, Niko Fortner and Fide Ntambwe scored for Franklin Central (2-3-2).

Morristown 2, Brown County 1

At Brown County Saturday, Jaxson Willard scored a goal in each half to lead the Yellow Jackets to the MHC victory.

Landon Rinzel was credited with seven saves in goal for Morristown (2-4-1, 1-2 MHC).

Brown County fell to 1-3-1 (0-3 MHC).

Girls soccer

Shelbyville 6, Southport 1

At Southport, the visiting Golden Bears scored four first-half goals and cruised to the win to improve to 4-3 this season.

Hali Chaney and Camille Chaney each scored two goals. Amara Lewis and Alyna Castanon completed the scoring. Camille Chaney also had two assists.

Binja Mulumeoderwa scored the only goal for Southport (2-5).

Volleyball

Batesville def. Shelbyville, 22-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19

At Shelbyville, the host Golden Bears won the opening set but were swept in the next three by the Bulldogs (7-2).

Annabelle Bringle led Shelbyville (5-5) with nine kills. Jordyn Noe and Lyla Wilson each had six kills.

Bryleigh Heller and Noe each had a team-high four service aces.

Waldron def. International, 25-18, 25-16, 25-18

At Waldron Friday, Maleah Williams had a team-high 14 kills and nine digs to improve the Mohawks to 5-5 this season.

Riley Thurston had seven kills and two service aces.

Ashlyn Ramsey finished with 15 assists and 11 digs.

International dropped to 3-3 this season.
