Trinity United Methodist Church kicks off annual fall Wick's Pie Sale

With fall just around the corner, Plymouth Trinity United Methodist Church is once again gearing up for its annual Fall Wick's Pie sale, giving the community a chance to stock up on a beloved Hoosier tradition for the holiday season.

The pies come from Wick's Pies, a Winchester-based business whose roots stretch back to 1944, when Duane "Wick" Wickersham opened a small food canteen inside a local glass factory to keep workers from slipping off to nearby pubs at lunch. A year later, using his grandmother's 19th-century farm recipe for sugar cream pie, he opened the Rainbow Restaurant in downtown Winchester, delivering surplus pies to customers in a 1934 Buick sedan.

Demand soared to 300 pies a day by 1948, and in 1961 Wick moved production to a dedicated factory on Greenville Avenue, adopting a patented nitrogen-freezing method that allowed the pies to be shipped nationwide. After retiring from the plant in 1986, he opened a restaurant and pie shop named for his wife and co-baker, Ruby. In 2009, Indiana officially named the sugar cream pie the Hoosier Pie and designated Winchester the state pie capital.

Today, the family-run business produces more than 10,000 pies and 30,000 crust shells in a single shift — all from a grandmother's old farm recipe.

Trinity United Methodist Church is currently taking orders for frozen pies, which carry a shelf life of one year. Available flavors include Sugar Cream, Pecan, Peanut Butter, Pumpkin, Pumpkin Spice, German Chocolate, and Coconut Sugar Cream. Pies are $10 each and will arrive frozen, ready for holiday gatherings.

The deadline to place orders is September 20. Pickup will be held October 14 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 425 S. Michigan Street.
