Sheriff Hassel releases September Jail & Department report

Matt Hassel, Marshall County’s Sheriff, released the September 2025 Jail report this week.

The report includes the Top Ten Offenses leading to jail intake. In September, the number one reason was failure to appear, with 28 arrests.  Operator Never Licensed followed in second place with 26 bookings, Operating While Intoxicated was third with 25 arrests, Possession of Marijuana was fourth with 21 bookings, and Domestic Battery was fifth with 7 individuals placed in jail.  Driving While Suspended was sixth on the list with 6 arrests, followed by Intimidation, which also had 6 arrests.  Rounding out the top ten was Reckless Driving with 6 bookings; ninth was Violation of House Arrest or Pre-Trial Release with 6 arrests, and Battery was tenth with 5 arrests.

A total of 153 individuals were booked into the Marshall County Jail in September.  Officers with the Culver Police Dept. made 2 arrests; Community Corrections had 3 arrests; Bourbon Police put 4 people in jail; Argos officers arrested 5; Bremen Police made 6 arrests; and Troopers with the Indiana State Police had 10 bookings. Officers with the Plymouth Police Department arrested a total of 51 individuals in September, while Deputies with the Sheriff’s Department arrested 72.

On Count Day, October 14, there were 139 inmates in the Marshall County Jail, 113 males and 26 females.  Of the 139 inmates, 1 was serving time for civil charges, 3 for misdemeanor charges, and 21 for felony charges.  There were also 95 inmates held for pre-trial, 15 awaiting arraignments, and 4 being held for another agency.

The jail's average daily population in September 2025 was 139, up from 128 in March 2025, six months earlier, and 131 in September 2024.

There are currently 341 active warrants awaiting service.

Deputies with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department investigated 60 accidents in September: 36 were property damage, 23 involved personal injury, and 1 resulted in a fatality. 

County Officers opened 80 case reports, issued 98 warnings or citations, and conducted 9 security checks.

The Marshall County Central Dispatch Center answered 5,900 calls in September.  1,409 were 911 calls, with 98.2% being answered in 10 seconds or less. The Sheriff’s Dept. responded to 1,300 calls for service in September.
