A power company has announced that it plans to shut down three Illinois power plants in the coming years, including one located in southeastern Illinois.
Vista Energy Corporation is a U.S. based company with 7000 employees which provides its services in 10 states across the country, including Illinois and Indiana.
They have informed the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) that locations in Baldwin, Kincaid and Newton will close. The Newton plant is in Jasper County in southeastern Illinois and will have 83 workers permanently laid off after ending operations in October of 2027. The Kincaid plant will have 99 employees laid off in January of 2028 and Baldwin 122 workers in February of 2028.
The company issued a statement citing economic, environmental and regulatory factors as the cause of the actions.
