New programs, new rooms for library in August

August brings the start of school, the end of summer reading, and new programs and locations to the Shelby County Public Library.

The beginning of school brings a new rhythm for residents -- shopping for school supplies, sports and club activities added to family schedules, and time set aside for homework. The library has slowed its summer reading programs but kept the best parts with new programs and activities plus added new ones.

Board Game Club has moved rooms to accommodate their boisterous fun. The club has moved to the Carnegie East Wing Room C; that’s the big room. On Thursday, the club will play There’s a Murder at 6 p.m. Room C offers plenty of extra space for trading card groups to set up and swap cards.

The Youth Department at the Shelbyville Branch is sticking to its popular OC creation night on Aug. 6. In August, middle-schoolers and high-schoolers will create an original character to bring to life and put into action during the Dead Poets Society’s story workshop on Aug. 21. Youth ages 11-and-up may come to either or both workshops; however, if you only attend Dead Poets Society, bring a character for the writing workshop. After writing, authors may share their work, if they wish.

The Velma Wortman Morristown Branch revamped its offering, adding weekly Dungeons & Dragons tabletop gaming on Thursdays. Times will change as school begins, but each week D&D will meet on Thursdays. This Thursday’s time is from 1 to 5 p.m., but Aug. 8, the time shifts to 3:30 to 6 p.m.

This will be a Learn the Game session. This D&D will be for teens only, beginning at age 14.

Read & Feed with After School Snacks is for school-age students and teens. Every Monday, youth may stop by for a snack and learn tips on how to make the tasty treats themselves.

Wednesday afternoons are reserved for STEM crafts for ages 6-11 beginning at 3 p.m. Adults will be able to enjoy some time themselves during Friday Morning Club on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. or Coffee & Cards on Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m.

Looking forward, the library locations will be closed Aug. 9 so all staff may participate in training. No library card racing will be allowed, of course.
