After months of wishing and hoping, Greencastle officials made it official this week, as North Jackson Street on the west side of the Putnam County Courthouse is reopened.
In recent months, that area of the road had seen multiple semi trucks get stuck trying to navigate the turn during construction as part of the ongoing US 231 project.
Greencastle Mayor Lynda Dunbar told The Putnam County Post she was "finally glad" to see a portion of US 231 open.
"I however, cannot stress enough that the road needs to be traveled with caution. INDOT has placed a 2-way stop at Washington and Jackson since we do not have pedestrian crossing lights and a 4 way stop at Franklin and US231 (Jackson). It is important that you now have on coming traffic that we have not seen in a while," Dunbar said, adding all businesses are still open with full access.
As Dunbar said, stop signs have been added at the intersections of Franklin and North Jaxkson and Washington and North Jackson. The stoplight at Washington and North Jackson is flashing to emphasize there is a stop now, according to Dunbar.
City officials remind motorists that all traffic is supposed to stop to allow pedestrians an opportunity to cross. Furthermore, Dunbar wants residents to know there is still no eastbound turning onto West Washington Street from North Jackson St., as this remains closed.
