Congressman Yakym hosts HRSA Administrator in northern Indiana, highlights federal support for Hoosier families

On Wednesday, Congressman Rudy Yakym (IN-02) hosted Thomas J. Engels, Administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), for a two-stop visit in Indiana's Second Congressional District, highlighting federal investments that expand access to primary care and strengthen maternal and infant health.

"Hoosier families deserve care that's close to home, and that's exactly what these programs deliver," said Rep. Yakym. "It was great to have Administrator Engels in the district to see this work up close, and I'm grateful for his partnership and for HRSA's work alongside us. Cost, quality, and access to health care are front of mind for the Hoosiers I represent. These investments meet them where they are."

The first stop was HealthLinc's Mishawaka clinic, a Federally Qualified Health Center serving patients of all ages across 14 sites in northern Indiana. The visit concluded at Goodwill of Michiana in Elkhart, which operates the Nurse-Family Partnership locally.

"Under President Trump, HRSA is putting resources where they matter most. Expanding primary care, strengthening the health workforce, and improving outcomes for mothers and infants," said HRSA Administrator Engels. "Congressman Yakym has been a steady partner in this work, and it was good to join him in Mishawaka and Elkhart to see those results firsthand.”

• HRSA awarded HealthLinc $4,824,591 in 2025 and $500,000 in 2024 for accelerated cancer screening. A separate $250,000 special project grant funded the July 2025 Mishawaka remodel.
• That investment added 10,200 square feet and 26 exam rooms, expected to deliver 14,000 more visits to 4,600 more patients in 2026.

Nurse-Family Partnership

• MIECHV and Title V dollars flow from HRSA through the State of Indiana to local providers, pairing first-time parents with a registered nurse from pregnancy through the child's second birthday.
• In the most recent reporting year, the local program served 1,028 women, with 89.5 percent of babies born at a healthy weight.
• Yakym has been a leading voice for MIECHV in Congress. In February, the House passed his bipartisan Support for Expectant and Parenting Foster Youth Act (H.R. 7655), which strengthens coordination between MIECHV and the Chafee program for expectant and parenting foster youth.
