Come for the cars; stay for the movie

There may not be a film that blends cars, characters, and classic tunes better than George Lucas’ iconic “American Graffiti.” On Saturday, July 20, everyone can enjoy a special evening dedicated to the movie in downtown Plymouth.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., classic car owners will be parking downtown so everyone can stroll around them before the 7:30 p.m. showing of the film at The REES, 100 North Michigan Street. The combination event is sponsored by Ameriprise Financial advisor Douglas Gehrke.

While downtown, people are encouraged to eat at one of the downtown restaurants. Beary’s Emporium will also have its food truck on hand to assist visitors.

“American Graffiti” follows a group of friends’ final night together in the summer of 1962. The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Director for Lucas. The cast included Ron Howard, Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, and Candy Clark. It also introduced disc jockey Wolfman Jack and actress Suzanne Somers (the blonde in the Thunderbird) to the world.

The movie’s soundtrack includes 41 rock ‘n’ roll classics by the Beach Boys, Bill Haley & the Comets, Del Shannon, Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, Buddy Holly, The Platters, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, and many more. The double album was so popular, it was certified as triple platinum, reaching No. 10 on the 1973 Billboard charts despite all the songs being more than a decade old.

Tickets for “American Graffiti” may be purchased online at reestheater.com; Fernbaugh’s Jewelry; and at The REES box office 45 minutes before the show. This is a special family night at the movies, so children 12 and younger are free. Adults are $5.
