Attorney General Rokita seeks execution date for convicted Vanderburgh County child killer

Attorney General Todd Rokita today filed a formal motion with the Indiana Supreme Court seeking an execution date for Jeffrey Weisheit, who was convicted and sentenced to death for the brutal 2010 murders of two young children in Vanderburgh County.

“For more than 15 years, the family of these two innocent children has waited for justice,” said Attorney General Rokita. “A jury lawfully convicted Weisheit and sentenced him to death. That sentence has been upheld through every level of the judicial system. It is long past time to carry out the sentence.”

Weisheit was convicted in 2012 for the April 2010 murders of 5-year-old Caleb Lynch and 7-year-old Alyssa Lynch. He hog-tied Caleb with duct tape, placed railroad flares in the boy’s underwear, lit them, and then fled the house. Alyssa was also inside the residence at the time. Both children died as the fire spread and consumed the home. Weisheit was eventually apprehended after leading officers on a high-speed chase into Kentucky; before they could detain him, he threw a knife at the pursuing officers.

For several years, the State of Indiana paused lawful executions due to pharmaceutical companies withholding the drugs required to carry them out from the Department of Correction. That issue has been resolved.

This execution, once scheduled and carried out, would mark the fourth execution in Indiana since 2024.
