Shelbyville senior's swim career ends at IHSAA State Finals

Riley Everette’s record-breaking swimming career at Shelbyville came to a close Friday night at the Indiana State Finals in Indianapolis.

Everette (photo) missed the cut in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly. The top 16 finishers in each preliminary event Friday advanced to Saturday’s championship and consolation races.

The Shelbyville senior stepped up to the starter’s block first in the 50 freestyle and clocked a time of 24.63 seconds to finish 26th in the field of 32.

Everette was a surprise qualifier in the 50 freestyle. However, she expected a return trip to the state finals in the 100 butterfly – an event she won easily at the New Palestine Sectional.

She entered Friday’s event seeded 18th overall and sixth in the second of four heats.

Everette nearly matched her sectional winning time of 56.69 with a swim of 56.70 but she missed the top 16 cut by .40 seconds, finishing 18th overall in the state meet.

Penn’s Caroline Ball secured the final advancing position with a time of 56.30.

The state finals are held at the Indiana University Natatorium – the home of IU Indy’s swim program. Everette will join IU Indy next season to continue her swimming career.
