HUNTINGTON - The season came to an unfortunate end for Plymouth gymnast Kyla Heckaman in the regional at Huntington North High School. Kyla missed out on a chance to advance to the State Finals when she inadvertently left out a series of jumps from her beam routine. She scored a 9.050 and finished in 10th place, but the omitted jumps cost her 0.4 of a point. Kyla’s routine was almost flawless otherwise, and if she had completed her jumps cleanly, she likely would have finished second and easily qualified for State. In her other events, Kyla scored 8.400 on the vault, 8.550 on the bars, and 8.950 on the floor exercise for an all-around score of 34.950, which was good enough for 14th place. Despite the disappointing end to the season, Coach Amanda Bender was upbeat about the prospects for next season. “Next year, we’re hoping to be here as a team,” she said. “It’s our goal.”
