Janet Payne Puffer, age 87, of Vincennes, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Gentle Care in Vincennes, Indiana. She was born April 27, 1938 in Robinson, Illinois, in a shotgun-shack near the railroad track, the daughter of Gerald R. Payne and Eunice Seall Payne.
Janet served in the U.S. Army at Fort McClellan in Alabama. She was also stationed in Orleans, France in the early 1960s. Janet was employed by Golden Rule Insurance for almost 40 years, until her retirement in 2004. She greatly enjoyed league bowling for over 30 years, stopping only when there were no more bowling lanes open. She was an avid reader of western style romance novels. Janet was consumed by a torrid love of actor, Mark Harmon. Sadly, he was unaware. Throughout most of her adult life, she was often quoted saying, “Shut up, Jerry!” Her kind disposition, her loving smile, her hearty laugh, and her demonic screams while watching football, will remain with us all for the rest of our days.
Preceding Janet in death were her parents, a sister, and a brother.
Survivors include: her son, Jerry Puffer and wife, Vickie, of Vincennes, Indiana; a sister, Vivian Jones of Robinson; several nieces and nephews and their many children.
Graveside services will be Monday, May 19, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Lawrenceville City Cemetery. There will be no public visitation. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of donor’s choice.
