On Tuesday, February 28, 2023, Marshall County Sheriff's Deputy Haygood made a traffic stop on U.S. 31 in the area of 11th Road. The motorist, identified as, Rickey Smith Jr., age 29, of St Joseph, Michigan was stopped for driving more than the posted speed limit.
The traffic stop further revealed that Smith had never received a driver’s license. He detained at the scene and then transported to the Marshall County Jail and lodged for Operating a Vehicle Without Ever Receiving a License. His cash bond was set a $100.
Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is merely an allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
