Marshall County residents facing cancer will soon have access to more advanced treatment options closer to home, thanks to a major investment by Saint Joseph Health System.
Saint Joseph Plymouth Medical Center has announced a $5 million capital investment to significantly expand oncology services at its Plymouth campus. The four-month project is designed to reduce the need for patients to travel to larger cities for cancer treatment.
The expansion includes three key components: broader infusion services for chemotherapy and immunotherapy, the addition of a new linear accelerator for advanced radiation oncology treatments, and the recruitment of a hematology and oncology specialist.
The new linear accelerator is scheduled to be online by October 31 and will allow physicians to deliver highly precise radiation treatments that better target tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue — a level of care typically found only at larger cancer centers.
On the staffing front, Dr. Ebenezer Kio, a hematology and oncology provider with roots in the region, is set to join the Saint Joseph Medical Group on September 21. "Dr. Kio brings a strong commitment to patient-centered care and a deep connection to the region we serve," said Dr. Leah Napolitano, president of Saint Joseph Medical Group. "His expertise in hematology and oncology, combined with his compassionate approach, will further strengthen our ability to provide exceptional cancer care close to home."
Christopher Karam, president of Saint Joseph Health System, said the investment reflects the organization's long-term commitment to the community. "By expanding oncology services at Saint Joseph Plymouth Medical Center, we are meeting patients where they are and supporting them through every step of their cancer journey."
The impact is already being felt by local patients. Art Jacobs, a battalion chief with the Plymouth Fire Department, shared his experience receiving care at the facility. "I am grateful that our community has access to this level of care close to home, without having to travel to South Bend or Mishawaka for treatment," he said. "The nurses are incredibly caring, compassionate, and attentive — their kindness, professionalism, and genuine concern for patients make a difficult journey so much easier."
Construction and installation are currently underway, with expanded services rolling out as upgrades are completed in the coming months.
