Pair of Putnam County deputies honored for life-saving efforts

A pair of Putnam County Sheriff's Office deputies were recently recognized for their life-saving efforts during a May 11th call.

According to Sheriff Jerrod Baugh, deputies were dispatched to a motorcycle accident. Upon arrival, they found a male victim who had sustained a severe leg injury with significant blood loss.

Deputies Patrick Landis and Larry Freund immediately sprang into action, controlling the bleeding with a tourniquet.

The tourniquet temporarily controlled bleeding until movement of the injured leg resulted in bleeding to resume, forcing the deputies to apply a second tourniquet

According to Baugh, his deputies' actions aided the motorcyclist's survival.

"Deputies Landis and Freund's calm demeanor, decisive actions, and preparedness during a rapidly evolving emergency directly contributed to the successful treatment and survival of the injured motorcyclist. Their quick response and assistance during a life-threatening medical emergency exemplify the highest standards of professionalism, dedication, and commitment to preserving human life," Baugh said.

Both Landis and Freund received the Putnam County Sheriff's Life Saving Award.
