Jacob James spent hours and hours at the Blue River Cross Country Course. It is only fitting to have a memorial in his honor displayed near the starting line at a course he would routinely dominate.
“Cross country is one family,” a quote on the memorial states.
That statement has been apparent since James’ passing in 2019 as those who knew him well have kept his memory alive.
The Jacob James 5th Anniversary 5K Cross Country Race and 1-Mile Walk is set for June 14 at the cross country course at Blue River Memorial Park in Shelbyville. The new memorial adds a proper touch to an already-beautiful course.
“A donation from 2019 was given to (BRCCC) when many teammates, competitors, family and friends bought T-shirts with my sons’ face,” said Shelley Adams, who is James’ mother. “Gary Nolley has provided this space close to the start line and McIntire Lawn and Landscape did the work. It is a very appreciated and appropriate memorial to serve cross country for many years. It was completed (last) week. Another mention is Chad Williams, who provided the artwork.”

This year's event will include a walking option around the perimeter of the 5K course. All runners and walkers will start at the same place at the same time.
All profits from the race will benefit the Jacob James Integrity Fund, which provides scholarships to student athletes at Waldron High School who run cross country or participate in track and field. Funds are held and administered by the Blue River Community Foundation.
