The Illinois State Police (ISP) and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) have announced that they are intensifying their efforts to enforce the state's Move Over law, also known as Scott's Law.
The law mandates that drivers change lanes and slow down when approaching stationary emergency vehicles with activated lights on the side of the road.
If a lane change is unsafe, drivers must reduce speed and proceed with caution.
The law applies to a wide range of vehicles that includes law enforcement, ambulances and fire trucks, IDOT vehicles, tow trucks and other authorized emergency vehicles.
However, drivers are urged to move over and slow down for any vehicle with flashing lights stopped on the roadside.
Fines for violating the Move Over law range from $250 up to $10,000.
If the violation causes injury or death, it becomes an Illinois felony with potential suspension of driving privileges.
In 2025. there have already been five Move Over related crashes resulting in injury to four state troopers.
