American Legion Post #27 in Plymouth will host the Memorial Day services this year on Monday, May 27.
Of the two official United States holidays recognizing the commitment of members of America's military services, Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives while defending their country.
The annual service in Plymouth honors those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and died in the military. The ceremony begins at the Marshall County Courthouse where a wreath will be placed at 10 a.m. The ceremony then moves to the South Michigan Street bridge where a salute to Navy Veterans will take place by placing a wreath in the Yellow River.
The community is invited to Oakhill Cemetery at 11 a.m. where Mayor Robert Listenberger will speak on Memorial Day. Special guest speaker Steve Beam will also speak to those attending and the Plymouth High School Band will also perform.
Steve Beam was born and raised in Plymouth. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1962 and retired from the military in 1990 as a Master Chief Cryptologic Technician. During a period of broken military service, Beam graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1976 and was a police officer for the City of Plymouth from 1976 to 1997. After retirement from the Navy Steve Beam taught school for 16 years and was a Criminal Justice Adjunct Instructor in college for 11 years.
