Marshall County tired of “Horsing Around;” problem animals impounded, owner charged with animal cruelty

The Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday the impound of two horses posing a public safety hazard.

Court documents allege that since 2024, officers at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department have responded to over 35 calls for service involving two horses in the 6500 block of Plymouth-LaPorte Trail. Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies frequently corral loose horses and return them to their owner, with most occurrences involving the horses being in a public roadway, posing serious danger to motorists.

According to Court documents, the horses shall be evaluated by the State Veterinarian, and if determined to be in jeopardy, the animals can be confiscated. Jenetta Nickerson, the horses’ owner, has been charged with cruelty to an animal and animals running at large in Marshall County Superior Court II.

The latest investigation is led by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, including First Sgt. Nick Laffoon and Detective Sergeant Jonathan Bryant, and prosecution by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Ashley Lowe of the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is merely an allegation that a crime has been committed, and there is only probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings, entitled to be represented by counsel, and entitled to a trial jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
