The Lawrence-Allison Fire Protection District (LAFPD) has announced it is seeking community funding support in order to acquire a Firefighter Rehab Unit.

The effort comes after some recent incidents of some of the local firefighters suffering heat exhaustion from the extreme summer weather conditions while at working at fire scenes. The vehicle would be utilized as a cooling or warming center for fire personnel at the location and to house victims displaced by fire. It could also be utilized as a mobile command center in the event of a major disaster in Lawrence or other surrounding counties, if need be.

The estimated cost to purchase and fully equip such a vehicle is around $50,000, according to LAFPD Chief Bill Powell. He indicated that early efforts have raised about 20% of the money needed. Any local businesses, community leaders and the general public that would like to contribute is invited to do so. For additional information, contact Chief Powell via e-mail or Facebook.
