Federal Department of Agriculture (FDA) officials have informed the state of Illinois that it will not fund November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or food stamp benefits if the federal government shutdown continues.
As a result, Snap customers in Lawrence and other counties will not have access to any new food benefits starting on Saturday, November 1st 2025, unless the federal government re-opens. Snap is 100% federally funded and the stoppage of payments to Illinois would impact 1.9 million recipients. Illinois administers more than $350 million in SNAP benefits each month that helps feed families in every area of the state. If SNAP funds are not delivered by the federal government, the state does not have the budgetary ability to backfill the critical resources.
