On the first day Illinois voters can apply to vote by mail in the November general election, Attorney General Kwame Raoul launched an election resource hub on his office’s website to help educate voters on their rights and options for voting.
It has been the longstanding practice of the Attorney General’s office to monitor elections in Illinois to ensure that voters’ rights are protected and polling places are accessible.
“Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy,” Raoul said. “The Constitution gives states the responsibility of administering elections. Illinois voters should rest assured that in Illinois, we are focused on facilitating, not limiting, their access to the ballot box. No matter who Illinoisians vote for this November, they have a right to cast their ballots freely and fairly. Knowing your rights and making a voting plan will ensure your vote will be counted.”
The election hub offers details on voting by mail and early voting, as well as other resources. Voters can find important dates in the lead-up to the Nov. 3 general election and the answers to frequently asked voting questions. The hub will be regularly updated, and more information will be added as the general election nears. The Attorney General’s office will also share information for voters on the office’s social media accounts.
Raoul reminds voters in the state that today is the first day that they can apply to vote by mail. Illinois voters can vote by mail for any reason. Voters can request a mail-in ballot by filling out an application that can be obtained by visiting their local election authority in person or by visiting the Illinois State Board of Elections’ website.
The application for a ballot should be returned to the voter’s local election authority. Voters can look up their local election authority, including contact information. Mail-in ballots can be requested until Oct. 29.
Raoul also encourages Illinoisans who want to register to vote to do so through trusted sources, such as at the office of their local election authority, through the State Board of Elections’ Online Voter Application or the Illinois Secretary of State Motor Voter Registration service at DMV facilities.
