Gov. Braun: “Indiana achieves second-largest drop in veteran homelessness nationwide”

Indiana Governor Mike Braun today announced that Indiana achieved the second-largest drop in veteran homelessness nationwide. Since taking office, Gov. Braun strategically doubled the resources allocated to nonprofits that support Hoosier veterans, leveraging more efficient and targeted funding decisions. Amid these efforts, Indiana recorded an 18.7% decline in veteran homelessness in 2025, marking the second-largest percentage decrease of any state, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s annual Point-in-Time count.

“Hoosier veterans answered the call to serve our country, and we have a responsibility to make sure they are supported when they come home," said Gov. Braun. "By investing in high-impact housing solutions and preventive assistance, veterans get stability and a real path forward. The decline in veteran homelessness is tremendous progress, and it reflects the meaningful impact of these programs.”

Through the Grants for Veterans’ (GVS) Services program, Indiana demonstrates its ongoing commitment to housing stability by deploying resources to help prevent homelessness among veterans. The effective distribution of GVS funding strengthens nonprofit organizations across Indiana, allowing them to provide critical services to veterans and achieve measurable progress.

Among the recipients are organizations such as ECHO Housing and Liberty Place, which provide short-term and transitional housing support while working toward permanent housing solutions. The focused assistance from these organizations and others helps ensure that veterans and their families remain securely in their homes.

In addition, through the Military Family Relief Fund (MFRF), direct support is provided to veterans for housing and utilities, helping families avoid eviction, utility shutoffs, and unstable living situations. The MFRF is funded through revenue generated from Indiana’s military and veteran license plates, ensuring that Hoosiers who choose these plates are directly supporting veterans in need.
