For eight years now, Laura Kohrman has rented space to run a Gold Star Dance Academy. Monday night at City Hall, she moved one step closer to creating a permanent home for her dance studio.
The Shelbyville Plan Commission gave a favorable recommendation to Kohrman’s rezone request that would turn a former church (photo) into a permanent dance studio.
The Ville Church moved to its new location at 2133 Tucker Road in Shelbyville leaving its former home at 1115 St. Joseph St. vacant. Kohrman and her husband, Travis, purchased the building with the goal of creating a permanent home for Gold Star Dance Academy.

The dance studio, which would be located next to Hendricks Elementary School, would only be open three days a week – Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays – and not until at least 4 p.m., according to Kohrman.
The rezone application now returns to the Shelbyville Common Council for final approval.
In other commission business Monday:
- Delivered a favorable recommendation to David Muselman to subdivide one parcel, roughly 12.8 acres in size, into three lots for a market rate apartment complex now known as "Summit of Shelbyville" along Progress Parkway. The three parcels would then be developed separately to create a nearly 300 apartment complex on the city’s southeast side. Muselman expects to begin Phase 1 as soon as possible.
