A former Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) officer has been sentenced to jail after pleading guilty to bringing drugs into the Lawrence Correctional Center near Sumner.

27-year-old Lathan Lane from Fairfield made the plea after an appearance in court in August. He was formally charged with Bringing Cannabis into a State Penal Institution, a Class 1 Illinois Felony after an investigation which began in May of 2024. The sentence was handed down in October.

As part of a negotiated plea agreement, Lane was given 48 months on probation and must serve one year of periodic confinement. Lane will have to spend 52 weekends in jail. Instead of having to serve the jail time in Lawrence County, Lane will complete the sentence in the Wayne County Jail located in Fairfield.
